Salt water is its own thing. It holds you differently, tastes different, smells different — the combination of brine and cold and the sound of waves does something to the nervous system that freshwater can't quite replicate. The UK's coastline is extraordinary for swimming: from the turquoise bays of Cornwall and Pembrokeshire to the dramatic sea lochs of Scotland, from tiny coves accessible only on foot to organised beach swims with safety cover. Some of the best spots here have nothing at all — just the sea and however much courage you've brought with you.
